Keep Maui Green

Keep Maui Green

Maintaining a green lifestyle has become increasingly important in the Hawaiian Islands. With a limited amount of space on each island, local governments have launched initiatives to increase the awareness of what can be done to reduce, reuse and recycle the size of each island’s landfills. Hawaii Public Radio has launched a series of blog posts that list resources as well as up to date information on the issue of recycling in the Hawaiian Islands (

Maui is encouraging its inhabitants to lessen their footprint and look for alternative methods of dealing with waste. In the 2015 Green Issue of the Maui Time (4/16/15, vol. 18, issue 44), they feature the debate for and against the county’s proposed waste-to-energy facility. If current projections stay on track, Maui could receive its own waste-to-energy facility in 2017. This type of plant would convert raw waste products into different types of fuel products. By doing so, this would take pressure off the Maui landfills and begin generating revenue for the county of Maui. The debates are focused on deciding if such a project is sustainable in this environment. All of these discussions further the awareness of how important recycling and reusable energy is becoming on Maui. For the full article, go to http://www.mauitime/com/news.

5A Rent-A-Space in Lahaina is committed to renewable energy and creating a greener Maui. Currently we have Solar panels installed on our facility, as well as those of our retailers. We conduct monthly shred and e-waste events to reduce garbage in our local landfill. We also work with the local Rotary in making greater strides to provide assistance to local Maui residents in Going Green. Serves: 5-6

·         1 pound stir fry beef strips
·         3 bell peppers (different colors), sliced
·         1 large sweet onion, sliced
·         10-12 flour tortillas, fajita size, warmed
For the marinade:
·         3 tablespoons olive oil
·         1½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
·         ½ teaspoon liquid smoke
·         4 cloves garlic, crushed
·         1½ tablespoons Fajita Seasoning (Penzey's)

·         1½ teaspoons cumin
·         ¾ teaspoon salt
·         ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
For the Toppings:
·         2 limes, cut into wedges
·         1 cup Queso Fresco
·         1 cup salsa
·         1-2 avocados, sliced
·         ½ cup cilantro

1.        In a bowl, mix together all marinade ingredients.
2.       Heat a large skillet (preferably a cast iron skillet) over medium-high heat.
3.       Drizzle beef strips with half the marinade and then sear in skillet for 2-3 minutes on each side until slightly browned/blackened. When done, remove from pan and set aside in a bowl.
4.       In the same skillet over medium-high heat, sear the veggies drizzled with the remaining marinade. Toss occasionally and cook until tender but slightly firm and slightly browned (about 5 minutes).
5.       Throw meat back in the pan, toss to combine, and serve.
6.       Assemble fajitas by placing meat & veggies on a warm tortilla and top with fresh lime juice, avocado slices, salsa, cheese, and cilantro.

Women Helping Women

Giving to Our Community

Part of our company culture at 5 A Rent – a – Space is the importance of supporting our communities.  The communities surrounding each site are unique, and provide different opportunities for us to give back in a meaningful way.  This week I would like to highlight our Lahaina Team that supports an organization in West Maui called Women Helping Women.  Women Helping Women is an organization that provides shelter and resources for domestic abuse survivors and their children. Along with providing temporary housing for these women and children, they provide clothing, job training, and home furnishings for everyone who enters their shelter. One important component of their non-profit is ReVive Boutique. This stylish thrift store not only provides an affordable way for women to purchase much needed personal items, it also provides job training for women looking to re-enter the workforce. They accept donations at their Kahului location (65 W. Kaahumanu Ave, Unit 32, Kahului, HI 96732) between 10am – 4pm. You can also make a donation at our 5A Lahaina location. Liz, Maria and Scott can provide you with a receipt which is tax deductible. Donations of clothes, gently used furniture and home furnishings are accepted at both locations. If you are in need of emergency shelter, or would like to help this amazing non-profit please contact Women Helping Women on Maui at 808-579-9581 or online at:
