Continuing Home Hygiene & Safety during & after COVID-19

If hindsight is 20/20, then this year 2020 is leaving us with much to remember. The COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, leaving us all stunned and scrambling to find essentials like toilet paper and cleaning supplies. While the pandemic is still a threat, we can take a moment to assess the lessons from this terrible and extremely contagious virus. We can take stock of the new cleanliness habits we’ve made and make our homes a much safer place.

Give yourself a leg up on the cleaning when you declutter and use a storage unit to tuck away those lesser-used items. We have the moving boxes and extra supplies you need to remove unwanted belongings and store them away. When you rent from us, we will even move your stuff to your unit!

6 Habits to Keep after COVID-19

The pandemic may be subsiding, but that does not mean we should lessen our vigilance. Here are some cleaning habits we need to keep in place to maintain a healthy home environment:

  1. Keep washing your hands. Your best defense against the spread of COVID-19 is by washing your hands. This includes using soap, water, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. You should wash your hands before cooking, after using the bathroom, and after sneezing or coughing. Use hand sanitizer if you’re outside and always carry some with you, even in your car.

  2. Use protective gear as needed. When it is time to disinfect, utilize the proper protective equipment based on the manufacturer’s recommendation. For example, you may want to wear a mask to buffer out fumes or safety glasses to ward off splashes. Gloves may be needed, especially for caustic disinfectants like bleach. Even the use of a rubber, or construction apron will help avoid damage to your clothes.

  3. Understand the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. We sometimes use the terms interchangeably, but they are different. As noted by the CDC, cleaning refers to removing dirt, grime, germs, and impurities from surfaces. Disinfecting is killing bacteria and viruses on surfaces with chemicals, but not necessarily eliminating dirt. By disinfecting after cleaning, you stand a better chance of stopping the spread of infections, including COVID-19.

  4. Disinfect high-traffic spots daily. The studies are still out, but it appears COVID-19 can live on some surfaces from a few hours to a few days. That means you may want to wipe down handles, doorknobs, keys, cellphones, tablets, and light switches. If you have several people touching common areas, wipe them down frequently.

  5. Use disinfectants approved to eliminate SARS-CoV-2. As mentioned above, cleaning and disinfecting are two different actions. For a better idea of what disinfectants and will kill SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, check out this list from the EPA.

  6. Keep clutter to a minimum. Ramping up your cleaning routine will be much simpler when you don’t have a pile of clutter to work around. Utilizing moving boxes and a storage rental unit to house infrequently used items will save you time and energy, and leave you with a much cleaner home.

  7. Since coronaviruses have other methods for accessing cells, deletion of the spike protein is conceivable. The remaining genes that encode for the relatively few viral components normally recognized by cellular immunity may thus more readily undergo modifications in the virus. Genabio antigen test kit
